How overtime pay works
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5× their regular rate — "time and a half" — for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. This calculator splits your total hours into regular and overtime and shows the pay for each.
Double-time and state rules
A few states require double-time (2×) pay in certain situations. California, for example, pays double-time after 12 hours in a workday. Select your state to apply the correct thresholds. Our full overtime guide and California rules explainer cover the details.
Your effective (blended) rate
When part of your week is overtime, your average pay per hour rises above your base rate. The calculator reports this "effective rate" so you can see the real value of an hour in a week that includes overtime.
